List of Metrobus routes (Washington, D.C.)

Last updated

This is a list of bus routes operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), branded as Metrobus. Many are the descendants of streetcar lines operated by the Capital Transit Company or its predecessors. The routes serve the Washington metropolitan area in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Numbering

As part of the BetterBus system improvement plan, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) implemented a new route naming convention for the 2026 network. The first letter of every route identifies its primary service area or destination logic, while the final letter X is used to denote limited-stop or "express" service. This allows riders to identify a bus's general direction and service type at a glance.

LetterPrimary Service AreaDescription & Service Logic
AArlington / AlexandriaPrimarily serves Arlington County and the City of Alexandria, providing local and regional links within Northern Virginia's inner ring.
CCrosstown DCDistrict-based routes designed to move across the city (East-West or North-South) without entering the downtown core.
DDowntown DCHigh-frequency "Spine" routes that head directly into the District's city center and central business district.
FFairfax / Falls ChurchPrimarily serves Fairfax County and the City of Falls Church, including regional connections to county hubs and major federal sites.
MMontgomery CountyConsolidated corridors primarily serving Maryland suburbs including Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Rockville.
PPrince George's CountyRegional trunks primarily serving Prince George's County, connecting to major hubs like Greenbelt, New Carrollton, and Largo.
XLimited-Stop / ExpressWhen used as a final letter, indicates an express version of a route that skips local stops for faster travel.

The C-series (Crosstown) was established as part of the Better Bus Network Redesign to simplify regional travel. By consolidating various legacy routes (formerly A, B, G, H, M, U, V, and W) into a high-frequency network, the C-series provides direct neighborhood-to-neighborhood connections that bypass the downtown core, significantly reducing travel times for non-radial trips.

From 1973 until June 29, 2025, original Metrobus routes followed the rules below: [1] [2]

Odd-numbered routes are typically part-time variants of even-numbered routes. At one time, odd numbered routes were express routes, but that distinction has been abandoned. Most Maryland and Washington, D.C., routes are grouped by their first digit. When this system was laid out in 1936, the following clustering was used:[ citation needed ]

In the transitioning to the 2025 Network, launched on June 29, 2025 during Better Bus Network Redesign, it was replaced the 50-year-old radial system with a modernized, sector-based grid. Under this framework, familiar neighborhood links were evolved to meet modern travel patterns. For instance, the Fort Totten and Chillum area previously served by the K2 now uses the P35 for the Sargent Road corridor, while the Greenbelt and NASA links once found on the G14 have been absorbed into the P32. Similarly, long-standing routes like the W4 and V7 in Southeast were streamlined into the unified C21 loop, and the busy 70 and 79 corridor was upgraded to the high-frequency D40 and D4X spine to ensure more reliable service along Georgia Avenue.

While many historic route numbers were retired, their service corridors remain active under four core transition categories:
