God of War is an upcoming American fantasy drama television series created by Ronald D. Moore for Amazon Prime Video. Based on the video game franchise developed by Santa Monica Studio, the series follows father and son Kratos (Ryan Hurst) and Atreus (Callum Vinson) as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye.
Development by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios and PlayStation Productions began in March 2022 with a full season being ordered by Amazon in May 2022. A second season is in development.
In March 2022, Deadline Hollywood reported that a God of War live-action television series was in negotiations with Amazon Prime Video by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. [1] On May 2022, the series was officially announced and by December, Amazon greenlit the series. [2] [3] Santa Monica Studios studio creative director Cory Barlog serves as executive producer. [4] In April 2023, PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash stated that the "same care and formula" that was done with The Last of Us , would be applied to God of War. [5] By January 2024, writing was underway on the series. [6] In October 2024, Ronald D. Moore was hired as the showrunner. [7] In December 2025, Frederick E. O. Toye had been hired to direct the first two episodes of the series, with the series also being renewed for a second season. [8] The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. [9]
In January 2026, it was announced that Ryan Hurst had been cast in the lead role of Kratos. Hurst previously provided the voice and motion capture for Thor in God of War Ragnarök (2022). [10] That same month, it was announced that Teresa Palmer, Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin, Danny Woodburn, and Jeff Gulka had been cast as Phoebe/Sif, Heimdall, Thor, Odin, Brok, and Sindri respectively, with Alastair Duncan reprising his role as Mimir from the games. Principal photography began on February 27, 2026, in Vancouver, and it is expected to wrap on April 7, 2027. [18] [9]
