Tomb Raider is an upcoming television series developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Amazon Prime Video. Based on the action-adventure video game franchise created by Toby Gard and Paul Douglas [a] , the series stars Sophie Turner as Lara Croft alongside Martin Bobb-Semple, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and Bill Paterson.
Amazon signed a deal with Crystal Dynamics to distribute future installments of the video game franchise in 2022. The following year, they expended their deal to produce live-action projects, and the series was announced on January 2023, with Waller-Bridge developing the project, and Legendary Television and Dmitri M. Johnson's Story Kitchen, who previously produced the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft , producing. Turner was cast as Lara Croft on September 2025, while the rest of the cast was announced throughout the year.
Tomb Raider is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video.
Following the cancellation of a sequel to the 2018 film adaptation in July 2022, the Embracer Group, who own Crystal Dynamics, launch a bidding war for the film rights to the franchise. [1] The rights where ultimately acquired by Dmitri M. Johnson's Story Kitchen and Legendary Entertainment, who then produced the animated television series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for Netflix, while in December 2022, Amazon signed a deal with Crystal Dynamics to publish future installments of the video game franchise. In late January 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the company expended their deal to produce live-action projects, and that Phoebe Waller-Bridge was developing a Tomb Raider television series for Amazon Prime Video. [4] [5] Megan McDonnell was hired to write the series. [6] It was greenlit in May 2024 by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios. Waller-Bridge wrote the series and is an executive producer alongside Jenny Robbins through Wells Street Productions. Other executive producers include Dmitri M. Johnson through Story Kitchen, as well as Michael Scheel and Legendary Television, and Chad Hodge as co-showrunner. [7] [8]
By late October 2024, Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton were in the running for the role of Lara Croft, with Turner entering negotiation for the role the following month. [9] [10] She was officially confirmed in September 2025. [8] In December, Martin Bobb-Semple, Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs were cast. Principal photography began on 15 January 2026, at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, [8] [15] and in London. [16]
