He had been implicated in orchestrating terrorist operations, intelligence gathering, and planning targeted assassinations outside Iran, particularly against Iranian dissidents, Western figures, and Israeli targets.

On 6 April 2026, Israel claimed he had been killed in airstrikes, but Iran had not yet confirmed the same. [1] [2]

Background and role in the IRGC

Yazdan Mir is believed to be a senior official within Iran's Intelligence Organization and has played a crucial role in executing foreign operations on behalf of the IRGC's Quds Force. His responsibilities include overseeing covert missions, recruiting operatives, and coordinating attacks outside Iran's borders. He has been identified as a key figure in the secretive Unit 840, a division specializing in targeted killings, kidnappings, and destabilization operations. [3]

Involvement in international operations

Yazdan Mir has been linked to multiple international terror plots attributed to Unit 840, a covert division of the IRGC Quds Force specializing in assassination missions, intelligence operations, and weapons smuggling. Reports indicate that he has played a crucial role in recruiting and training operatives for targeted killings, particularly against Iranian opposition figures and Israeli citizens. [4] Intelligence sources suggest that Mir has been involved in attacks and attempted assassinations across Europe, the Middle East, East Africa, the Caucasus, Asia, and Latin America. His name has also surfaced in connection with Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, an IRGC commander assassinated in Tehran in 2022, who was deeply involved in planning terrorist operations abroad. Following Khodaei's death, Mir is believed to have continued some of those missions. [5] [6] [7]

Among his key operations, Mir has orchestrated attacks and facilitated weapons smuggling on behalf of Unit 840. One major campaign involved the placement of anti-personnel mines and Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Israel-Syria border in the Golan Heights, specifically targeting Israel Defense Forces (IDF) units. These efforts were disrupted by Israeli intelligence in both 2020 and 2022. Additionally, Unit 840 has played a significant role in arming militant factions, sponsoring Unit 18840 and Wing 4000 (IRGC Intelligence) in Syria to smuggle advanced weaponry—including anti-tank mines and Rocket-propelled grenades (RPG)—into the West Bank via Jordan. [6] Beyond the Middle East, the unit has expanded its global reach by establishing terror networks in Europe, the United States, and other regions, often leveraging local criminal organizations to carry out its objectives. [8] Intelligence reports have linked Unit 840 to multiple assassination plots in Germany, Turkey, and France, with several failed attempts targeting Israeli and Western figures. [9] [10]

Sanctions and international response

Due to his role in Iran's intelligence operations and alleged involvement in terrorism, Yazdan Mir has been a subject of scrutiny by Western intelligence agencies. Reports have called for sanctions and countermeasures to limit his ability to coordinate international operations. [11] Security agencies in multiple countries continue to monitor Mir and Unit 840's activities as part of broader efforts to counter Iranian-sponsored terrorism. [3] [11]
