William D. Araiza

William D. Araiza is an American lawyer and law professor. He is the Stanley A. August Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, a former Supreme Court law clerk and the author of Rebuilding Expertise: Creating Effective and Trustworthy Regulation in an Age of Doubt, among other works.

Education

Araiza received his B.A., summa cum laude, 1983, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University, [1] [2] and studied a year abroad at the London School of Economics in 1981-1982. [1] [3] He earned a M.S. in international relations, graduating with Highest Honors, 1985, from Georgetown University, [1] [3] worked in banking for a few years, [3] and then attended Yale Law School, where he received his J.D., 1990, and was a notes editor for the Yale Law Journal . [1]

Career

Araiza clerked for Judge William A. Norris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and served as a law clerk to associate justice David Souter. [3] [4]

He worked as an environmental and insurance litigation associate at Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe [1] [3] and as an environmental and general litigation associate at McCutchen, Doyle, Brown and Enersen in Los Angeles. [1] [3] Araiza is a member of the American Bar Association, National LGBT Bar Association, and Hispanic National Bar Association. [1]

In 1995, Araiza joined the faculty of Loyola Law School Los Angeles as an associate professor of constitutional and administrative law and became a full professor in 1999. [3] He was named an associate dean of faculty in 2005, [3] and during his Loyola tenure the Rev. Richard A. Vachon, S.J. Fellow.

In 2009, Araiza moved to Brooklyn Law School, [5] where he teaches administrative and constitutional law classes and serves as the Stanley August Professor of Law. [4]

In addition to Loyola Law and Brooklyn Law, Araiza has taught at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, the Fordham University School of Law, Lewis & Clark Law School, New York University School of Law (where he was an adjunct professor in 2024), [6] UCLA School of Law, the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law, and Washington and Lee University School of Law (where he was a visiting professor in spring 2005). [3] [4] He chaired the administrative law section of the Association of American Law Schools in 2013. [7]

David D. Cole is the National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Before joining the ACLU in July 2016, Cole was the Hon. George J. Mitchell Professor in Law and Public Policy at the Georgetown University Law Center from March 2014 through December 2016. He has published in various legal fields including constitutional law, national security, criminal justice, civil rights, and law and literature. Cole has litigated several significant First Amendment cases in the Supreme Court of the United States, as well a number of influential cases concerning civil rights and national security. Rodney A. Smolla, is an American author, First Amendment scholar and lawyer. He is currently the president of the Vermont Law and Graduate School, and was the 11th president of Furman University.

Barry E. Friedman is an American academic and one of the country's leading authorities on constitutional law, policing, criminal procedure, and federal courts, working at the intersections of law, politics and history. Friedman teaches a variety of courses including Judicial Decisionmaking, Federal Courts and the Federal System, and Criminal Procedure: Fourth and Fifth Amendments, as well as a seminar on Democratic Policing. He writes about judicial review, constitutional law and theory, federal jurisdiction, judicial behavior, and policing. His scholarship appears regularly in the nation's top law and peer-edited reviews.

Susan N. Herman is an American legal scholar who served as president of the American Civil Liberties Union from October 2008 to January 2021. Herman has taught at Brooklyn Law School since 1980.

Ephraim S. London was an American attorney and law professor specializing in constitutional law who established a reputation as a defender of free speech and civil liberties. He taught constitutional law at the New York University School of Law, his alma mater. He wrote The World of Law, a textbook that was widely used in law schools. He was also the author of The Law as Literature.

Frederick Franklin Schauer was an American legal scholar who served as David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law. He was also the Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He was well known for his work on American constitutional law, free speech, and on legal reasoning, especially the nature and value of legal formalism.

Nancy Christine Staudt is the Frank and Marcia Carlucci Dean of the Pardee RAND Graduate School and the Vice President of Innovation at RAND Corporation. She is a scholar in tax, tax policy, and empirical legal studies.

Hernandez Stroud is a senior counsel for the Justice Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. An expert on prisons and jails and constitutional law, he researches and drafts criminal justice policy reforms at the federal level; he also studies federal judicial intervention into state prisons and local jails, particularly court takeovers of correctional institutions through receivership. Roberta Sarah Karmel was an American attorney and the Centennial Professor of Law, and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of International Business Law, at Brooklyn Law School. She was the first female Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Alexis Hoag-Fordjour is an assistant professor of law and co-director of the Center for Criminal Justice at Brooklyn Law School. Born in Southern California, Hoag-Fordjour is a first-generation Tanzanian-American (Chagga). She received a bachelor's degree from Yale University, and a Juris Doctor degree from NYU School of Law, after which she spent more than a decade working as a civil rights and capital defense attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., and the Office of the Federal Public Defender. Hoag-Fordjour was the inaugural practitioner-in-residence at the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil & Political Rights at Columbia University and a lecturer at Columbia Law School. She served as a law clerk to the late Honorable John T. Nixon of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.
