The episode picks up immediately after the messy premiere. Lucy and Stephen agree to go out with the group to a karaoke bar in an attempt to keep things normal, but their dynamic quickly deteriorates. At the club, Stephen’s insecurity flares when Evan shows up with Moll; he humiliates Lucy by leaving her alone onstage after she invites him to sing with her. Bree jumps in and performs with her to salvage the moment, but Stephen storms off in a jealous mood. After Stephen leaves the bar, Lucy follows him outside. She pleads with him not to sabotage everything, confessing she fears losing both him and Bree — revealing how torn she feels between her toxic relationship and her friendships. Later that night, Stephen gives Lucy an ultimatum: if she tells Bree that she slept with Evan, they can stay together. Lucy recognizes this is manipulative — a punishment rather than reconciliation — and chooses Bree over Stephen. She stands up to him, breaking up with him again and telling him she won’t let him control her by using secrets as leverage. When Stephen threatens to tell Bree himself, Lucy boldly predicts he won’t, because that would mean giving up the one thing he has to control her. Though they break up, the aftermath isn’t clean: Lucy lies awake that night, restless and imagining Stephen around campus. After returning to her dorm, Lucy ends up in a panic attack after an intense conversation with Bree about fear of being hurt. Unable to calm herself, Pippa calls Alex, a grad student and drug supplier who brings medication to help Lucy settle down and uses a calming tapping technique to help her breathe. It’s revealed that Alex is someone Bree know from the past; Bree realizes she and Alex have a shared history from the foster care system. At the karaoke bar Bree notices a freshman named Amanda — a girl she saw earlier leaving Oliver’s office. Bree strikes up a conversation, befriending Amanda and learning about her own insecurities. Initially relieved to hear Amanda has a long-distance boyfriend, Bree later finds out Amanda’s boyfriend *broke up with her because she cheated* — implying Amanda is also involved with Oliver. This revelation deeply shakes Bree, confirming her suspicions that Oliver’s behavior isn’t just a one-off mistake, but part of a troubling pattern with younger women. The next day on campus, Evan notices Bree’s nervous reaction when Oliver walks by, leading him to confront the professor directly — though Oliver gaslights him, denying wrongdoing.

Diana reaches out to Pippa. After some frank conversation about their feelings for each other, they share a passionate kiss, even though Pippa is still dating Wrigley. Meanwhile Wrigley bonds with Bree more at photography class.

This reveals that Wrigley was the mysterious caller Bree received in earlier seasons. It is revealed Pippa knows Wrigley is still in love with Bree, and it has all been an act.

The episode opens on Stephen celebrating his acceptance into Yale Law School — a milestone he boasts about to his friends and anyone who’ll listen. He calls his sister first, but she ignores him, then drag Evan and Wrigley into a night out to keep the party going. His plan? To bring everyone back to his dorm room — the same room where Drew died — which Wrigley finally calls out as bizarre and insensitive. Diana, reveals to Stephen that she not only got into Yale Law too — but that she lied about her LSAT scores just to get away from him. Stephen is stunned when she says she’ll change her entire life plans.to avoid attending Yale with him. Lucy’s emotional turmoil continues to get darker. She reconnects with Alex, but when Alex tries to shift to slower, more caring intimacy, Lucy resists — she wants the pain-coupled dynamic she’s used to from Stephen’s abuse. Later, back in her dorm, she finds the bucket of urine that was left outside her door earlier in the season and carries it into her shower so no one can see it. The school hosts a charity pool party, and gossip about Lucy spreads rapidly. Pippa tells Lucy that another alleged victim — Caitie — also found a bucket of urine outside her room, suggesting the harassment is now circulating campus-wide. Lucy tries to deflect, but tension continues to mount. At the pool, Stephen flirts with Tegan, a girl he met earlier, using Evan’s money to make bets and show off. Evan, in turn, is cold towards Molly, Bree embarks on a deeply personal road trip with Wrigley: she wants to reconnect with her estranged mother, Mary. They drive to New Jersey together, and Bree learns new, painful truths about her childhood — including that Mary only briefly had custody of her and then left her with her grandparents. This shakes Bree’s understanding of her past. After visiting Mary and sharing a brunch with her, Bree talks openly with Wrigley on the drive back. She reveals she never learned how to swim because of the instability in her life. Wrigley stops at a pool and gently teaches her how to float and swim — a vulnerable and intimate moment that nearly turns into a kiss. The next morning Bree chooses to bury the moment by re-announcing that she and Evan are back together to Pippa and Wrigley. Wrigley’s heartbreak is clear. As the episode draws to a close, s true nature becomes chillingly clear. In his dorm, Stephen sifts through intimate photos of Diana and begins attaching them to an email.

Back in her room, Lucy puts on her laptop the old voicemail where Stephen calls her horrible things. Instead of recoiling, she engages with the message sexually.

The episode opens with Pippa and Wrigley waking up together but distant — they share a courteous greeting but are both preoccupied with other people (Wrigley with Bree, Pippa with Diana). Diana’s Valentine’s bliss collapses when her mother calls, furious that intimate photos of Diana were anonymously sent to her father. The group attend a goth-themed party meant as an “Anti-Valentine’s” celebration. Stephen arrives with a freshman date named Tegan, and Bree brings Alex to support Lucy. Alex immediately senses Lucy’s discomfort around Stephen. Lucy refuses to admit she’s afraid of him. Chris corners Pippa, insisting Lucy mentioned their hookup from last year as inappropriate. Pippa uncomfortably defends the encounter as consensual — but tension between her and Lucy rises. Bree tries to make amends with freshman Amanda, only to learn Amanda is 17, making her prior romance with much-older Oliver not only unethical but illegal. This rattles Bree deeply. Later, Bree tells Evan that her birth mother Mary can attend her photography exhibit. Instead of being supportive, Evan expresses fear about Mary’s alcoholism and is upset Bree didn’t tell him sooner. To lighten the mood, Tegan organizes a drinking game called Paranoia. Each player writes a superlative (“most likely to…”), leading to awkward reveals and barbs. Bree names Wrigley in a way that references a dark inside joke about suicide — and Wrigley, not seeing humor, is hurt. Pippa leaves the party, and Bree tries to apologize, but Wrigley — frustrated — insists she confide in Evan, not him. Lucy and Alex leave the party for drinks. At a bar, Lucy drunkenly expresses lingering feelings for Max and breaks a glass before Alex escorts her home. At his apartment, Alex presses Lucy on why she fears Stephen. Overwhelmed, she confesses she thinks Alex likes her more when she’s in her sad, self-loathing state. He reluctantly gives in to her desire for rough intimacy, and they have sex. Afterward, Lucy drunkenly heads out, intending to go home — but mistakenly tries to enter Stephen’s dorm door, a stark sign of her emotional instability. Stephen greets her with superficial concern, but Lucy withdraws and walks away. Lucy later confides in Diana that she feels like she’s “sleepwalking through life” — trapped between anxiety, fear, and unresolved trauma with Stephen. Diana advises her not to let Stephen continue to have power over her by refusing to react to him. Meanwhile, Bree attempts to talk with Evan about her mother — but the conversation devolves into argument. Evan asks Wrigley to walk Bree home, leaving them alone in the street. Bree vents to Wrigley about being misunderstood, and he expresses his long-held frustration with group. Bree then visits Marianne, who gives her sobering advice: “It’s better to be with someone who loves you a little more than you love them.” That sentiment foreshadows future choices — including Bree’s eventual decision to marry Evan despite her feelings for Wrigley.

The next morning, Bree reaches out to Wrigley, admitting he “makes things better” and that her feelings are confusing. They share a heartfelt hug and finally kiss.

Episode 7 picks up immediately after Bree and Wrigley’s first kiss. Both grapple with how complicated it is given that Bree is still with Evan and Wrigley is still with Pippa. They confess their feelings genuinely and agree they should break up with their partners — Wrigley tells Pippa that they’re more like best friends than lovers, and Bree tells Evan she needs space and plans to end things with him. They tentatively leave with the promise to start something real later. But reality quickly interferes. Evan seeks advice from Oliver and then attempts to win Bree back emotionally by manipulating her — he picks up Bree’s mother, Mary, from the train station for pre-show drinks before Bree’s photography exhibition. Mary, who struggles with alcoholism, arrives drunk and embarrasses Bree at her own event. Evan lies to Bree, claiming Mary was already drunk before he picked her up, further straining Bree’s relationship with her mom. Meanwhile, Wrigley tries to formally break up with Pippa. She reacts badly, despite having cheated on him, and in a vulnerable moment she ends up seducing him. They have sex, and Wrigley, wracked with guilt and confusion, misses a key call from Bree. The next morning, when Bree sees Pippa and Lucy together, Pippa reveals she slept with Wrigley, and Bree is devastated. Lucy, after devising a risky plan to neutralize Stephen’s power over her by pretending she wants to reconcile with him, Lucy attempts to manipulate Stephen into giving up the tape. She tells Stephen she’ll be honest with Bree about her one-night stand with Evan if he gives her the tape. Stephen appears to play along, but he actually enjoys the psychological game. Eventually, after Lucy breaks down and begs to see the video itself, Stephen hands her the tape, claiming he hasn’t made copies — though he cryptically warns she can choose whether to believe him. Lucy’s mental state is left ambiguous: the next day she gives the same warning to freshman Tegan that she already gave the day before, suggesting she might be emotionally unstable or that her grasp on recent events isn’t solid.

While Bree wrestles with the chaos caused by her mom and Pippa and Wrigley sleeping together, she retreats to Evan’s place, while Evan is showering she sees a Facebook photo from the Hawaiian party (where Evan cheated on her), and realizes Evan and Lucy were together in the background of that photo. With that shocking discovery, Bree grabs Evan’s phone just as the episode ends.

The episode opens in 2015 at Bree and Evan's wedding with Bree smoking outside. She accidentally gets caught by Wrigley who was staying over at Evan's house. The two argue over how their brief relationship ended with Wrigley expressing his frustration over how they haven't spoken to one another in six years. However, both still have feelings for one another and the two proceeded to briefly have sex before hearing footsteps outside the bedroom door. The episode flashes back to 2009 where Lucy unexpectedly runs into Diana. Lucy tells Diana that Stephen gave her the tape, much to Diana's surprise. Diana tells Lucy that she believes her about the night of Macy's death, much to Lucy's relief. Diana also shares that Stephen was accepted to Yale and that she's decided to go to Stanford to put distance between them. Diana begins to cry, revealing how remorseful Diana is over the decision. Lucy is shown being visibly angry over Stephen yet again destroying others while getting what he wants in return.

Meanwhile, Bree has fled Evan's apartment and is furiously making her way to Lucy's dorm to confront her over sleeping with Evan. However, by the time she arrives, Lucy is gone, having made her way to the Baird banquet for Yale acceptance students to sabotage Stephen. Before Bree can continue searching for Lucy, her mother Mary calls her saying she's on campus and wants to meet up with Bree. Once Bree finds her, Mary takes Bree to an office where she's surprisingly confronted by Marianne, Oliver and Amanda who have banned together and tell Bree they're prepared to report her for her "false" accusations about Oliver. Bree tries to defend herself, but unfortunately she has no proof as Oliver was careful not to put anything in writing. To make matters worse, Mary sides against Bree, telling her to stop harassing Oliver and Marianne. Bree storms out and ends her relationship with her mother after feeling betrayed by her.

At the Yale banquet, Lucy tries to warn the host of the event that Stephen is dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to attend Yale. However, Stephen catches her and is able to remove her from the event before she can further draw attention to them. He wards Lucy off, who flees the event, devastated. The next day, Lucy goes over to Bree and Pippa's dorm to find out only Pippa was there alone, and the two resolve their differences with the whole Chris situation. Pippa confesses to Lucy that she cheated on Wrigley and feels guilty about lying and hurting him. Lucy shares her own confession that she and Evan slept together at the Hawaiian party the previous year. Pippa, however, reacts angrily saying their situations are not the same and casting Lucy out, no longer wanting a friendship with her while also promising to not tell Bree.

Later, Wrigley is trying to get ahold of Bree but is interrupted by Pippa who confesses to cheating and shares she's gay. Wrigley is instantly forgiving of the cheating, having suspected something was off between them. He also accepts her sexuality and the two decide to remain good friends. Afterwards, Pippa and Wrigley discuss Stephen, with Pippa warning Wrigley that he's a terrible person. She tells him that he was the one who sent Diana's nudes picture to her parents, and that she's not going to Yale because of being afraid of Stephen.

We then see Lucy in class, but just as the lecture begins, she sees her video being played on a classmate's laptop. She bolts out of class and heads to her dorm, but on the way there she can see and hear the video being played by several students. She confronts Stephen and angrily attacks him, but he humorously shares he's not the one who leaked the video. Lucy heads to Alex's, hoping for empathy and comfort. Alex, hurt and angry, hints at his own past of sexual abuse from his foster home. He asks Lucy to leave and their relationship ends. As Alex heads back in side, we find Bree who was sleeping over in his apartment. Bree, despite being angry with Lucy, shows some empathy for her situation. Alex warns she shouldn't have been so trusting of others.

When Bree returns to her dorm the next day, she shares her confusion and disgust over Lucy's actions. Pippa confesses that she was the girl Chris sexually assaulted last semester and Lucy made the accusation so Chris could be punished. Bree and Pippa feel guilty over her harshness towards Lucy. They try to speak to Lucy but learn she's locked herself in her dorm. With the help of her RA, they're able to get inside and help comfort her. This is short-lived, as the dean is requesting to meet with Lucy immediately. Lucy meets with the dean who tells her that she's being expelled, which includes ending her desire to complete her study abroad program the following semester. Lucy, in shock, accepts the news and goes to pack up her items.

Elsewhere, Stephen finds Wrigley at lunch and casually dismisses what's happening to Lucy, saying she should suffer the consequences of her actions. Wrigley is left disgusted by Stephen. Later on, Stephen receives a call from Yale admissions, who rescind his offer. They tell him they learned of inappropriate conduct, including sending inappropriate pictures of a fellow student. Stephen angrily asks who shared the information, but the admissions office says the information is confidential. It's soon hinted that Wrigley was the one who made the call.

Back at Bree and Pippa's dorm, Evan stops by after looking for Bree ever since she abruptly left his apartment a couple days prior. She confronts him, asking about the affair with Lucy which he admits to, and the two decide to keep their relationship going. Wrigley arrives to try and make up with Bree, but finds her with Evan. She subtly reveals she knows about him and Pippa's night together, and that she's going to stay with Evan. Both Evan and Wrigley leave, and Bree sobs her in dorm over everything that has transpired the past few days. She then goes into her drawer and we see that she stole the memory card with Lucy's video on it, indicating that she leaked the video out of revenge. She destroys the card, crushed over her actions.

As Lucy is packing her items to leave Baird, Diana walks in and kindly offers to help. She tells Lucy that life will be hard for awhile, but not to give up as things will get better. Lucy is later seen loading her belongings into her mother's car. She says a heartfelt goodbye to Bree as Stephen watches from a distance.

Flash forward to 2015, Lucy and Bree joyously dance at Bree's wedding reception. Stephen is drinking watching them, annoyed that their friendship has survived. Lydia, annoyed with Stephen's actions, declares that wants to leave. Stephen tells her their relationship was based solely on him making Lucy jealous and that he's still involved with her. Lydia throws her engagement ring back at him and leaves him instantly. On the other side of the dance floor, Wrigley, Pippa, and Diana playfully banter, and we learn Diana ended up at Yale in the end.

As the wedding comes to a close, Stephen, having felt like he's lost, makes a final attempt to ruin the evening. He confronts Bree, confused as to why she continued on with the wedding. We learn the phone call Bree took was in fact Stephen playing Evan's confession tape. Bree says she doesn't care what Stephen says or does, everyone is happy, and he has nothing. Stephen figures out that not only has Bree known the whole time, but pieces together that she must've been so forgiving because she was the one that leaked Lucy's tape. Bree unconvincingly, denies this.

As the DJ announces the end of the night, Stephen steals the mic to reveal everyone's secrets. He tells Evan he's hated him for years, tells Lucy that Bree leaked the tape, shares that he and Lucy slept together that morning, and then exposes Wrigley and Bree's affair. Everyone is left confused and angry, processing the information and discovering the lies people have been holding onto for months, if not years. Chaos erupts, with Bree and Evan each attacking Stephen, Bree trying to explain herself to Lucy, and later Evan confronting Wrigley. Diana and Pippa, the only ones not involved in the confessions, happily leave together, putting the drama behind them.

Stephen tries to convince Lucy to leave with him, telling her that they both have nothing now, and need each other. Bree tries to convince Lucy to stay, but she's upset with Bree over the video leak. Bree walks away from Lucy to keep Evan from fighting with Wrigley. As Evan screams at Wrigley, all Wrigley can do is look over lovingly at Bree who smiles in return. Stephen waits in his car as Lucy eventually comes out, and agrees to leave with him, despite saying she hates him. In the final scene, Stephen and Lucy stop by a gas station where Lucy goes inside to get them coffees. When she comes back out, she sees Stephen has abandoned her there, leaving just her purse behind. However, instead of being sad that he tricked her again, she lets out a laugh, knowing that he's still the same guy from college. Lucy stands there and smiles, relieved to finally be free of him.

[25] The second season premiered on September 4, 2024, with two new episodes and the rest debuting on a weekly basis. Reception

Viewership

Whip Media's viewership tracking app, TV Time, which tracks viewership data for the more than 25 million worldwide users of its TV Time app, reported that Tell Me Lies ranked among the top ten most-streamed original series in the United States from the week ending September 8 to the week ending October 20, 2024. [26] TVision, which utilizes its TVision Power Score to evaluate CTV programming performance by factoring in viewership and engagement across over 1,000 apps and incorporating four key metrics—viewer attention time, total program time available for the season, program reach, and app reach—announced that Tell Me Lies was in the top fifteen of the most-streamed series in the United States for the week of September 2–8. It remained in the top twenty from September 23 to October 20. [27] Tell Me Lies remained in Hulu's "Top 15 Today"—a daily updated list of the platform's most-watched titles—for over 50 consecutive days throughout and following its Season 2 run. [28] [29]

The Tell Me Lies Season 3 premiere generated 5 million views globally across Disney+ and Hulu within its first seven days of streaming, representing a 150% increase compared to the Season 1 premiere over the same period. [30] [31] Nielsen Media Research, which records streaming viewership on certain U.S. television screens, reported that Tell Me Lies generated 391 million minutes of watch time from January 12—18, ranking as the eighth most-streamed original series during that week. [32] [33]

Critical response

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 75% approval rating based on 12 critic reviews. [34] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 65 out of 100 based on 8 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [35]

Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter said Tell Me Lies works effectively through its nuanced portrayal of the toxic relationship between Lucy and Stephen. Han found that the show's deliberate ambiguity about Stephen's character enhances the psychological depth, setting it apart from typical romance dramas. Han stated that the series captures the era's hookup culture with insight and nostalgia. Despite some slow-moving subplots, she noted that the performances and sharp realism create a compelling blend of guilty pleasure and reflective drama. [36] Steve Greene of IndieWire gave Tell Me Lies a B grade, noting that the series straddles a middle ground between idealizing and mortifying college life. Greene found the series' portrayal of the characters' passionate yet toxic relationship compelling but felt that its focus on a tight-knit friend group sometimes limited its broader depiction of college life. Greene praised the performances, especially the nuanced portrayal of Stephen as an enigmatic figure, and appreciated the show's slow-burn approach to developing its central drama. However, he noted that the show's contained narrative and tidy presentation somewhat hinder its potential for greatness. [37]

Elizabeth Logan of Glamour described Tell Me Lies as a drama with appealing visuals and a complex web of secrets, reminiscent of Big Little Lies but with a slower, more frustrating pace. While the show offers intriguing subplots and strong performances, particularly from Jackson White and Katey Sagal, Logan said it struggles with drawn-out revelations and a disconnect between its dramatic elements and realistic portrayal of college life. Logan found the show engaging yet uneven, hoping it will improve in a potential second season with better pacing and sharper dialogue. [38] Katherine Smith of Paste rated Tell Me Lies seven out of ten and said that the show features some positive elements, such as Catherine Missal's nuanced performance, which adds emotional depth and authenticity. Smith also found that the melodramatic subplots offer moments of engagement. However, she stated that the show falls short of transcending typical college romance and melodrama tropes, with its focus on the destructive and eroticized relationship between Lucy and Stephan lacking meaningful insight into toxic relationships. [39]

The third season has a 100% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based on 6 critic reviews. [40]
