The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is a trade union for coal miners in Great Britain,formed in 1945 from the Miners' Federation of Great Britain (MFGB). The NUM took part in three national miners' strikes,in 1972,1974 and 1984–85. After the 1984–85 strike,and the subsequent closure of most of Britain's coal mines,it became a much smaller union. It had around 170,000 members when Arthur Scargill became leader in 1981,a figure which had fallen in 2015 to an active membership of around 100.

He is also currently the honorary President of AZAPO while Strike Thokoane is the current President,this is not unusual in the Black Consciousness Movement as was the case with Steve Biko who was also the honorary President of the Black People's Convention in the early-1970s while Winfrey Kgware was the President. He was the Minister of Science and Technology.

Samson Gwede Mantashe,popularly known as Gwede Mantashe is a communist,South African politician,and trade unionist,who as of 18 December 2017,serves as the National Chairperson of the African National Congress. He is also a former chairperson of the South African Communist Party and Secretary General of the ANC. On the 26th of February 2018,during a cabinet reshuffle by president Cyril Ramaphosa,Mantashe was made Minister of Mineral Resources. In May 2019,he was appointed Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy,when his earlier portfolio was merged with the energy portfolio.

She previously held the position of Minister of Social Development. Prior to that,she served as the inaugural Minister of Women in the Presidency,created by President Jacob Zuma in May 2014. The Marikana massacre was the killing of thirty-four miners by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 16 August 2012,during a wildcat strike at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana,Rustenburg,North West province,South Africa. The massacre constituted the most lethal use of force by South African security forces against civilians since the Soweto uprising in 1976,and has been compared to the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. The incident was followed by similar strikes at other mines across South Africa,events which collectively made 2012 the most protest-filled year in the country since the end of apartheid.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) was formed in Mpumalanga,South Africa,in 1998 as a breakaway faction of the COSATU-affiliated National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). It was formally registered as a union in 2001. According to Mining Weekly,the union sees itself as distinct from NUM in that it is "apolitical and noncommunist".

Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega,commonly known as Riah Phiyega,was the National Police Commissioner of the South African Police Service. She was appointed to the office by South African President Jacob Zuma on 12 June 2012 and was the first woman to hold the post. Phiyega was suspended on 14 October 2015 by the President following a recommendation of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the deaths of protesting miners in Marikana in 2012.

A member of the African National Congress,he was elected to the Free State Provincial Legislature in May 2014. He was then appointed as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. A year later,he became the MEC for Economic and Small Business Development,Tourism and Environmental Affairs. Mashinini was appointed MEC for Police,Roads &Transport in October 2016. He was dismissed in October 2021.
