Siddani Bhaskara Rao is a graph theorist, Professor Emeritus, and director of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Calcutta. Rao is the first director of the CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. [2] S. B. Rao is known for his work on line graphs, frequency partitions and degree sequences. [3]

Rao hails from Andhra Pradesh and completed his M.A. (1965) in mathematics from Andhra University. [4] He received his Ph.D. (1971) from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta under the supervision of renowned Statistician CR Rao. After completing his Ph.D., he moved to the University of Mumbai to work with S. S. Shrikhande. At the same time, he visited King's College, Aberdeen to work with Crispin St. J. A. Nash-Williams. From the University of Mumbai, Rao went back to the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). While at ISI, he visited Ohio State University. Rao has guided students for their Ph.D.s in graph theory. He was the director of ISI Calcutta from 1995 to 2000. After retirement from ISI, he went to University of Hyderabad to work as the first director of the C. R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, Hyderabad. [5]

The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend" whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time.

He pioneered the development of fuzzy set theory, and neuro-fuzzy and rough-fuzzy computing for uncertainty modelling with demonstration in pattern recognition, image processing, machine learning, knowledge-based systems and data mining. Sambasiva Rao Kosaraju is an Indian-American professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins University, and division director for Computing & Communication Foundations at the National Science Foundation. He has done extensive work in the design and analysis of parallel and sequential algorithms.

Sharadchandra Shankar Shrikhande was an Indian mathematician with notable achievements in combinatorial mathematics. He was notable for his breakthrough work along with R. C. Bose and E. T. Parker in their disproof of the famous conjecture made by Leonhard Euler dated 1782 that there do not exist two mutually orthogonal latin squares of order 4n + 2 for any n. Shrikhande's specialties were combinatorics and statistical designs. The Shrikhande graph is used in statistical design.

Bhadriraju Krishnamurti was an Indian linguist who specialised in Dravidian languages. He was born in Ongole in the Madras Presidency of British India. He was the vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad from 1986 to 1993, and founded the Department of Linguistics at Osmania University, where he served as a professor from 1962 to 1986. His magnum opus, The Dravidian Languages, is considered a landmark volume in the study of Dravidian linguistics.

Dronamraju Krishna Rao was an Indian-born geneticist and president of the Foundation for Genetic Research in Houston, Texas. He was born in Pithapuram, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. One focus of his work has been the research of his mentor J. B. S. Haldane. As an author, his name is usually rendered Krishna R. Dronamraju. He died in Houston at age 83.

Patcha Ramachandra Rao was a metallurgist and administrator. He has the unique distinction of being the only vice-chancellor (2002–05) of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) who was also a student (1963–68) and faculty (1964–92) at that institution. From 1992 to 2002, Rao was the director of the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. After his tenure as vice-chancellor of B.H.U., in 2005, he took the reins of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) as its first vice-chancellor. He was to serve DIAT until his superannuation in 2007. Koneru Ramakrishna Rao was an Indian philosopher who served as Chancellor of GITAM, and as Chairman of GITAM school of Gandhian Studies, psychologist, parapsychologist, educationist, teacher, researcher and administrator. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2011.

Bhagavatula Lakshmi Surya Prakasa Rao is an Indian statistician. He was born on 6 October 1942 in Porumamilla, Andhra Pradesh. He completed his B.A. (Honours) course in Mathematics from Andhra University in 1960 and moved to the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, where he completed his M.Stat in Statistics in 1962. He graduated with a Ph.D in Statistics in 1966 from Michigan State University under Herman Rubin. He won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Mathematical Sciences in 1982 from the Government of India, the Outstanding Alumni award from the Michigan State University in 1996, and the National Award in memory of P V Sukhatme in 2008 from the Government of India. The Indian Society for Probability and Statistics awarded him the C R Rao Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. He is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1983), Indian National Science Academy (1984), Indian Academy of Sciences (1992), and National Academy of Sciences (1993).

Dwijesh Kumar Dutta Majumder INSA was a Professor Emeritus in the Computer and Communication Sciences Division of the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and Honorary Director-Secretary of the Institute of Cybernetics Systems and Information Technology in the same city. He is also an Emeritus Scientist of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, operated by the Government of India.
