Ron Arad is an industrial designer, artist, and architectural designer [1] [2] based in London. His work spans from large-scale architectural projects to public installations, studio pieces, furniture design and product design. The work is characterised by an experimental approach to materials, structure and form; ignoring boundaries between disciplines.life

Life and career

Ron Arad graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in 1979.[ citation needed ]

Arad co-founded One Off Limited in 1981 [3]  with Caroline Thorman later to be called Ron Arad Associates architecture and design practice in 1989, and in 2008 Ron Arad Architects was established with Caroline Thorman and Asa Bruno. [4] [5] [6]   [7] [8] [9]

Design and furniture

Arad’s early work in the studio was marked by self-produced furniture and direct experimentation with materials and fabrication, laying the foundation for later work across design, art and architecture [10] [11] . Over time, his practice expanded to include both limited-edition studio pieces works and design for industrial production for international manufacturers including Moroso, Vitra [12] , Kartell [13] [14] , Alessi, Fiat, Cassina, Cappellini, Driade, Kenzo [15] , Guzzini, WMF, Grundig, Venini, pq Eyewear [16] [17] and Swarovski [18] [19] among others. Public art

Public installations by Ron Arad Studio have been presented in locations including London [21] , Toronto, Seoul, Tokyo, Jerusalem [22] [23] , Singapore [24] and Valencia. [25]

Architecture

Early architectural projects include the Maserati Showroom [26] in Modena, Italy (2002), the Yohji Yamamoto flagship store in Tokyo, Japan (2003), the Médiacité. [27]

A major cultural project by the practice is the Design Museum Holon opened in 2010. [28]

Ron Arad Architects is also responsible for the ToHa office complex in Tel Aviv. The first phase of the project was completed in 2019, with a second phase currently under construction, extending the scale of the growing ToHa complex [29] [30] . The practice has also designed a cancer hospital in Afula, Israel. [31] [32] [33]

In 2017, Ron Arad Architects won the competition to design the UK Holocaust Memorial as part of a multidisciplinary team. [34]

Teaching and academic work

Arad has played a significant role in design education. He was Professor of Design at the Hochschule in Vienna from 1994 to 1997 and he served for many years as Professor of Design Products at the Royal College of Art in London, where he later became Professor Emeritus. Arad also holds an Honorary Doctorate from Tel Aviv University. [35]

Exhibitions and collections

Ron Arad’s work has been the subject of major exhibitions and retrospectives at institutions worldwide. These include solo exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, the Barbican Centre in London [36] , the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York [37] , the Triennale Milano, the Venice Biennale, Ivory Press in Madrid, the Holon Design Museum. [38]

Awards and recognition

Ron Arad is a Royal Academician [39] [40] . He has received numerous awards including the London Design Medal during the London Design Festival in 2011. [41] [42]
