Perisesarma bidens, the red claw crab (or red-clawed crab), is a species of crab found in the Indo-Pacific region from Zanzibar to Japan and Fiji. [1]
Perisesarma Bidens can have a leg span up to 4 in (100 mm). Carapace length is usually no more than 2 in (51 mm). [2]
Perisesarma Bidens is an omnivorous detritivore, and the majority of its diet is comprised of plant matter, such as algae, leaf litter, and inorganic sediments. Perisesarma Bidens are also known to eat each other if given the opportunity. Perisesarma Bidens goes through periods of increased appetite during the summer, and eats less overall during the winter. [3]
Fishkeepers who keep this crab in captivity have reported that Perisesarma Bidens eat fish and other crustaceans [2] [4] , although they seem to favour plant matter in the wild. [3]
Perisesarma Bidens are kept as a novelty aquatic pet by fishkeepers across the globe. [5]
Perisesarma Bidens requires a brackish paludarium-style tank to allow the crab to surface and breathe air. Ample hiding spots are ideal, especially for tanks housing multiple crabs, as it increases risk for cannibalism and aggression. [2] [4] [5]
