The North Sea Summits were launched in 2022 in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine with the aim of jointly reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports, particularly from Russia. The primary goal is to intensify cooperation on expanding offshore wind energy and developing infrastructure for hydrogen. [1]
At the third summit in Hamburg in January 2026, the participating countries decided to install 15 GW of offshore wind power annually for the period 2031 to 2040. The goal of having 300 GW of offshore wind power in the North Sea by 2050 was confirmed. Overall, this is expected to generate one trillion euros in economic activity and create over 90,000 jobs. [2]
