The foreign relations of Ghana are controlled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana. Ghana is active in the United Nations and many of its specialised agencies,the World Trade Organization,the Non-Aligned Movement,the Organisation of African Unity (OAU),the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States. Generally,it follows the consensus of the Non-aligned Movement and the OAU on economic and political issues not directly affecting its own interests. Ghana has been extremely active in international peacekeeping activities under UN auspices in Lebanon,Afghanistan,Rwanda,and the Balkans,in addition to an eight-year sub-regional initiative with its ECOWAS partners to develop and then enforce a cease-fire in Liberia. Ghana is also a member of the International Criminal Court.
Jerry John Rawlings was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who led the country for a brief period in 1979,and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military junta until 1992,and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
The Upper West Region of Ghana is located in the north-western corner of Ghana and is bordered by Upper East region to the east,Northern region to the south,and Burkina Faso to the west and north. The Upper West regional capital and largest settlement is Wa. The Upper West was created by the then Head of State,Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings in 1983 under the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) military regime. The area was carved out of the former Upper Region,which is now the Upper East Region. For about thirty-five years,it remained the youngest region of Ghana until 2018 when six more regions were created by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government;hence increasing the total number of administrative regions in the country to sixteen.
The Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) was the name of the Ghanaian government after the People's National Party's elected government was overthrown by Jerry Rawlings,the former head of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council,in a coup d'état on 31 December 1981. He remained in power until 7 January 1993. In a statement,Rawlings said that a "holy war" was necessary due to the PNP's failure to provide effective leadership and the collapse of the national economy and state services.
Joyce Rosalind Aryee is a Ghanaian former politician,business executive and minister. Aryee is recognized for having served Ghana for more than 40 years in both the public and private sectors. From 2001 to 2011,she served as the chief executive officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and was the first woman in Africa to have held that role. She has also held political roles in Ghana from the early years of the PNDC government. She is currently the executive director of Salt and Light Ministries,a para-church organization. She is an Honorary Council Member of the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors.
Emmanuel Evans-AnfomFRCSEd FICS FAAS FWACS was a Ghanaian physician,scholar,university administrator,and public servant who served as the second Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology from 1967 to 1973.
Emmanuel Nii Akwei Addo was a Ghanaian lawyer,judge and the Solicitor-General at the Office of the Attorney-General of Ghana from 1998 to 2007.
Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong,is a traditional ruler,a politician and a lawyer. He is the paramount chief or Omanhene of the Agogo Traditional Area of Ghana. He served as Secretary for Health,Secretary for Internal Affairs and Secretary for Chieftaincy Affairs in the PNDC government. He also served as a member of the council of state in the fourth Republic.
Franklin Adubobi Jantuah was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician. He was the Minister of State in the first republic and in the Provisional National Defence Council. He served as the Minister of Agriculture in the Nkrumah government and Minister for Local Government in the PNDC regime.
Lebrecht Wilhelm Fifi Hesse was a Ghanaian public servant and the first black African Rhodes Scholar. He served as Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on two occasions. He was also a member of the Public Services Commission of Ghana.
