This is a list of notable individuals who converted to Hinduism from Islam (who have individual Wikipedia articles).
The list records religious affiliation changes as documented by reliable sources and does not address ethnicity, culture, or politics. Entries are arranged alphabetically.
Early instances of Muslims converting to Hinduism are recorded in 8th-century Sindh following the Arab invasion (710–715 CE). Historian Edward Denison Ross notes that after the Arab military retreat, the settled Muslim population gradually assimilated into the local Hindu society. [1] [2]
During the early 20th century, the Arya Samaj made several organized conversion efforts in North India. By 1910, 1,052 Muslim Rajputs were recorded as converting to Hinduism, [3] [4] while by 1927 over 163,000 Malkanas were reported to have been integrated. [5] Group conversions involving the Sheikhs of Larkana and the Mula Jats and Bishnois of Punjab also took place. [5]
After independence, large-scale organized conversions have declined. Organizations such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) [5] have reported involvement in reconversion initiatives, often described under the term ghar wapsi . [6]
Outside India, documented conversions have taken place most prominently in Indonesia, often through the Sudhi Wadani ceremony in Bali. [7] [8] [9]
Bukka I Rai (who had accepted Islam and served the Delhi Sultanate during the 1330s) declared their independence. They reconverted into Hinduism and established the Vijayanagara Empire.
Khusrau Khan, a low class Hindu convert, to Islam, who usurped the kingdom, reverted to his ancient faith, began a reign of terror heaping dishonour on Muslim nobles.
Netaji Palkar, who, on account of his superb valour was known as a second Shivaji at his time, was lured by Mirza Jaisingh into Auranzeb's services, and in 1667 was forcibly converted to Islam. ...Only in 1676 could he get an opportunity to escape to Deccan and straightway seek a meeting with Shivaji. He was not only brought back to Hinduism but was taken back into his own community of Kayastha Prabhus without the least objection from anyone. Thus, the doors of Hinduism were opened to all those who wanted to return to it.
