Hinduism is a minority faith in Indian state of Nagaland followed by 8.75% of the population. There are 104,851 Hindus in Nagaland. [1]

History

Archeological sources say the Dimapur region was a very old medieval Hindu Kingdom. On the late medieval, upon the ruins of this, the Dimasa Kingdom was founded. [2]

Legend

According to local legend, Dimapur, the largest city in Nagaland, is said to have been named after the Mahabharatha character Hidimba. It was earlier known as Hidimbapur, meaning the city of Hidimba. Hidimbapur came to be known as Dimbapur and then Dimapur. [3] Another legend says that the Dimapur is a corruption of Hidimbapur, meaning the city of Hidimbi, the sister of Hidimba who later married the Pandava prince Bhima and gave birth to Ghatotkacha. [4]

The Mount Pauna in the Benreu village in Peren district is beleived by the nature worshippers there as the Sanjeevani hills. Locals there believe that the Hanuman uprooted Mount Pauna to revive Lakshman. They beleive the cailihei found there is the sanjeevani. [5] [6]

Demographics

The Hindu community in Nagaland is diverse including Nepali Hindus, Bengali Hindus, Marwari Hindus etc. [7] A majority of the Kachari people (69%) follows Hinduism. [8]

Hindus are concentrated mainly in Dimapur District (28.75%), Kohima District (11.8%) [9] and Niuland District (9.4%) [10] [a]
