Federico Ardila (born 1977) is a Colombian mathematician and DJ. He researches combinatorics and specializes in matroid theory. Ardila is currently a professor at Queen Mary University of London and has also held roles at San Francisco State University and the University of the Andes. [1] [2]
Ardila was born in Bogotá, Colombia. [3] While attending Colegio San Carlos, Ardila twice represented Colombia in the International Mathematical Olympiad, winning bronze in 1993 and silver in 1994. [4]
Ardila attended MIT. He first obtained a degree in mathematics in 1998, before completing a PhD in 2003 under the supervision of Richard P. Stanley. [5]
Outside of mathematics, Ardila is a co-founder of the DJ collective, La Pelanga. [6] [3]
Ardila has worked to create a more diverse community within mathematics. He aims to cultivate diversity through following principles that he has named Axioms. [1] [7]
Ardila has founded inclusivity initiatives such as SFSU-Colombia combinatorics and Todos Cuentan (everybody together). [8] As part of these initiatives, Ardila has provided over 200 hours of lecture videos on YouTube with additional free resources. [9] [10] He has also made several appearances in the mathematics YouTube video series Numberphile . [11]
Ardila has received many awards, among which are:
