Deepa Kundur is a Canadian engineer. She chairs the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at the University of Toronto. Kundur was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2015 for "contributions to signal processing techniques for multimedia and cybersecurity."
Kundur was born and raised in Toronto,Ontario,Canada [1] by parents Prabha Shankar and Gheeta Kundur. [2] She earned her Bachelor of Science,Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Toronto (U of T). [1]
Upon earning her Ph.D,Kundur accepted an assistant professorship at U of T's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She left in 2003 to accept a similar position at Texas A&M University,before returning to U of T in 2012 as a full professor. From 2014 to 2016,Kundur held the position of Associate Chair,Division of Engineering Science. [3] In this role at U of T,Kundur focused her research on using mathematical tools based in signal processing and applied cryptography,graph theory and dynamical systems. [4] Following the 2015 Ukraine power grid hack,Kundur worked with Scott Sanner to co-develop an algorithm to detect anomalous behaviour in power grids to avoid cyber attacks. [5] In recognition of her "contributions to signal processing techniques for multimedia and cybersecurity," Kundur was named a Fellow of the IEEE in 2015. [4] [6]
Kundur was appointed Chair of U of T's Division of Engineering Science in 2017. [3] In here first year as chair,she oversaw the establishment of Canada's first engineering major in Machine Intelligence. [7] In 2024,Kundur was appointed a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity of Intelligent Critical Infrastructure. [8]
