The New York City Transit Police Department was a law enforcement agency in New York City that existed from 1953 to 1995,and is currently part of the NYPD. The roots of this organization go back to 1936 when Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia authorized the hiring of special patrolmen for the New York City Subway. These patrolmen eventually became officers of the Transit Police. In 1949,the department was officially divorced from the New York City Police Department,but was eventually fully re-integrated in 1995 as the Transit Bureau of the New York City Police Department by New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
CompStat—or COMPSTAT,short for Compare Stats—is a police management system created by the New York City Police Department in 1994 with assistance from the New York City Police Foundation. Under CompStat,the department keeps a daily-updated digital record of crimes reported and in weekly meetings the department's leadership gathers to review trends in the data. It was credited with decreased crime rates in NYC during its early years,though scholarship is divided on whether it played a role. It has been criticized for leading to data manipulation and increased stop-and-frisk searches. Variations of the program have been used in police departments worldwide.
William Joseph Bratton CBE is an American businessman and former law enforcement officer who served two non-consecutive tenures as the New York City Police Commissioner and currently one of only two NYPD commissioners being so(the other is Raymond Kelly). He previously served as the Commissioner of the Boston Police Department (BPD) (1993–1994) and Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) (2002–2009). He is the only person to have led the police departments of the United States' two largest cities –New York and Los Angeles.
The New York City Police Department Housing Bureau is responsible for providing police services to about 420,000 people living in New York City's public housing projects. They are stationed in Police Service Areas (PSA),which are almost identical to police precincts,with nine PSAs in total located throughout Manhattan,Brooklyn,Queens,and The Bronx.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is structured into numerous bureaus and units. As a whole,the NYPD is headed by the Police Commissioner,a civilian administrator appointed by the Mayor,with the senior sworn uniformed officer of the service titled "Chief of Department". The Police Commissioner appoints the First Deputy Commissioner as the department's second-in-command and the Chief of Department as the department's highest ranking uniformed officer. The commissioner also appoints a number of deputy and assistant commissioners who do not have operational command and are solely for support and administrative function. Each enforcement bureau is further subdivided into sections,divisions,and units,and into patrol boroughs,precincts,and detective squads. Each bureau is commanded by a bureau chief. There are also a number of specialized units that are not part of any of the bureaus and report to the Chief of the Department.

Benjamin B. Tucker is an American police officer and administrator who was appointed First Deputy New York City Police Commissioner on Nov. 5,2014,in a ceremony at 1 Police Plaza in New York City. Commissioner Tucker is the NYPD's 43rd first deputy commissioner. "This is an amazing moment and time in my life," Tucker said. "I joined the NYPD family on November 21,1969,as an 18-year-old." He was sworn in as a police officer trainee at that time,and is now second in command of the nation's largest police force with a uniformed strength just shy of 35,000,plus several thousand in support staff. He later retired from the New York Police Department in December 2021.
