Zimny was born on August 5, 1900, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [1] After graduating from South Division High School, Zimny took part in the University of Wisconsin-Extension program. He was a member of the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America and the Knights of Columbus. Zimny died in 1973.
Zimny was a member of the Senate from 1935 to 1942. He was a Democrat.

Robert John Zimny was an American football tackle who played two seasons with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Brooklyn Tigers in the 28th round of the 1944 NFL draft. He played college football at Indiana University and attended St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of the Chicago Cardinals team that won the 1947 NFL Championship.

Incumbent Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin won re-election to a third term, narrowly defeating Republican nominee Eric Hovde. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump carried the state on the same ballot. This was the first time that Wisconsin voted for candidates of different political parties for U.S. senator and president since Democrat Gaylord Nelson was reelected as Republican Richard Nixon carried the state in 1968. The closest of Baldwin's three Senate victories, the race held similarities to Ron Johnson's narrow win in 2022, down to the percentage and raw vote margin by which the incumbents won.
The 2020 Wisconsin Senate elections were held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at the Fall general election in Wisconsin. 16 of the 33 seats in the Wisconsin Senate were up for election—the even-numbered districts. Before the election, Republicans held 18 seats, Democrats held 13, and two were vacant. Of the seats up for election, seven were held by Republicans, seven were held by Democrats, one was vacated by a Democratic resignation, and one was vacated by a Republican resignation. The primary election was held on August 11, 2020.
