The University of the West Indies (UWI),originally University College of the West Indies,is a public university system established to serve the higher education needs of the residents of 18 English-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean:Anguilla,Antigua and Barbuda,The Bahamas,Barbados,Belize,Bermuda,British Virgin Islands,Cayman Islands,Dominica,Grenada,Guyana,Jamaica,Montserrat,Saint Kitts and Nevis,Saint Lucia,Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,Trinidad and Tobago,and Turks and Caicos Islands. Each country is either a member of the Commonwealth of Nations or a British Overseas Territory. Albert Kwadwo Adu Boahen was a Ghanaian academic,historian,and politician. He was an academic at the University of Ghana from 1959 to 1990,from 1971 onwards as a professor. As a politician,he notably was a candidate in the 1992 Ghanaian presidential election,representing the main opposition New Patriotic Party.
Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong,is a Ghanaian female legal practitioner and a former Attorney General of Ghana and Minister for Justice of Ghana. She was appointed by President Mahama in 2013. She is the second woman to hold this office in the country,the first being Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu. Her tenure as Attorney General of Ghana ended on 6 January 2017. She was appointed to serve on the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce from 1 July 2018 for a three-year term. Vincent Cyril Richard Arthur Charles (V.C.R.A.C.) Crabbe was a Ghanaian jurist and public servant. He was a judge of the Supreme Court of Ghana from 1970 to 1972 and from 1980 to 1982. Before his appointment on the court,he formed and headed a permanent electoral commission to conduct the 1969 Ghanaian Election. He chaired the Constituent Assembly of 1979 that deliberated over and presented a constitution for Ghana's Third Republic before his reappointment to the supreme court.
Marian Ewurama Addy was a Ghanaian biochemist and the first Host of the National Science and Maths Quiz. The first Ghanaian woman to attain the rank of full professor of natural science,Addy became a role model for school girls and budding female scientists on the limitless opportunities in science,technology,engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Marian Addy was also a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences,elected in 1999. In the same year,she was awarded the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science.

Ebenezer Laing,was a Ghanaian botanist and geneticist who served as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana,Legon. He was a professor at the University of Ghana,Legon,and later an emeritus professor. Laing,together with his university and faculty colleague,George C. Clerk (1931–2019),was one of the first Ghanaian academics to specialise in botany as a scientific discipline and contributed significantly to the growth of the field in Ghana. He was also a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences,inducted in 1965. In 1985,he was elected an inaugural Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.
George Kwabena Effah Benneh was a Ghanaian geographer,academic and university administrator who served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana,Legon from 1992 to 1996. He was a professor and later an emeritus professor of Geography and Resource Development at the same university. Benneh was Minister of Lands,Natural Resources,Fuel and Power from 1979 to May 1981 and Minister of Finance from May 1981 to December 1981 under Hilla Limann during the Third Republic. Before this,Benneh has served as Commissioner for Lands,Natural Resources,Fuel and Power under the SMC II and AFRC regimes.
