Lal Kot, meaning red fort, was the first city built in the present Delhi area. It was founded by Tomar ruler king Anang Pal in 1060. Evidence suggests that the Tomar dynasty ruled in the South Delhi area around Suraj Kund, starting from 700AD. Then Chauhan king, Prithvi Raj Chauhan took over the rule in the twelfth century and named the city and fort as Qila Rai Pithora.
