"I Don't Love You" is a song by the American rock band My Chemical Romance from their third studio album The Black Parade (2006). It was released as the album's third single on April 3, 2007. The song is an emo power ballad. [3] [4] It has been certified Gold by both the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and Recorded Music NZ, and Platinum by both Music Canada and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). "I Don't Love You" was written by band members Bob Bryar, Frank Iero, Ray Toro, Gerard Way and Mikey Way, and was produced by the group alongside Rob Cavallo.
While the band was touring, they began to record using the bus's recording unit. "I Don't Love You" was one of the only songs to be used on the second-to-last album from the tour bus jam sessions. Ray Toro and Gerard Way can be seen playing an early version of the song from the tour bus sessions on the 2006 DVD Life on the Murder Scene . [5]
The music video portrays two lovers in a strange abstract world, while cutting between shots of the band performing and their instruments exploding. The music video is directed by Marc Webb [5] and is shot entirely in black and white. [6]
"I Don't Love You" was first announced as the sixth song on The Black Parade on September 13, 2006, originally titled as "I Don't Love You Like I Did". [7] The song was released alongside the album on October 23, 2006. [8] It was later released as the album's third single on April 3, 2007. [9] The song was included on the 2008 live album and DVD The Black Parade Is Dead! , which featured the final show performed on The Black Parade Tour. [10] The song was also released on September 23, 2016 as part of The Black Parade/Living with Ghosts , the 10th-anniversary reissue of The Black Parade. [11] The band would later play the song live during performances of The Black Parade as a whole, including during the 2024 When We Were Young festival [12] and the 2025 Long Live The Black Parade tour. "I Don't Love You" received acclaim from music critics, with NME describing the song as "Keane if they had any edge and loads of big rock guitars", [14] the song received a positive 4/5 star review from music site Pitchfork Media , who claimed: "..it's the band's first proper power ballad and, well, they should definitely think about writing dozens more". [15] Ariana Bacle of Entertainment Weekly ranked "I Don't Love You" at 11th in her ranking of The Black Parade, calling it "A departure from MCR’s usual sound". [16] In retrospective rankings of the band's discography, Marianne Eloise of Louder Sound ranked "I Don't Love You" as the band's 8th best song, [17] and Chloe Spinks of Gigwise ranked it at 19th. [18]
In the United Kingdom, "I Don't Love You" debuted at No. 13 on the UK Singles chart on the week of April 7, 2007, [19] before peaking at No. 3 on the Scotland Singles chart. [20] The single additionally reached No. 89 in Germany and No. 35 on the European Hot 100 Singles chart. [21] [22] In 2025, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the song platinum. [23] In Ireland, "I Don't Love You" peaked at No. 27 on the Irish Singles chart, and reached No. 64 on the Czech Republic Airplay charts. [24] [25]
In 2025, the track peaked at No. 4 on the Southeast Asia charts the week of July 11, [26] and also reached No. 5 on the Malaysia International charts, [27] the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certified the song gold in 2026.
